Summer doings and findings

So much going on around here these days. My mom came and visited for a few days and it was so nice to spend some quality time with her. School, ballet and karate classes, end of the year testing with the oldest. Planning for next years school lessons. Working in the garden. "Critter" finding. Bird watching and identifying. Tadpole raising and swimming in the neighbor's pool.

We are taking off tomorrow to go camping thru the weekend with my in-laws. I'm so excited! So today, I'll be packing, cleaning, bill paying, carting the kids to ballet and karate and grocery shopping. Lots to do!!!

Is it really July? How can it already be July?! Time just seems to move faster and faster. What happened to those endless summers when I was a kid? Time seemed to stand still then. The only thing endless these days are the dirty laundry and crumbs on my kitchen floor!

My little Lilianne took her first first ballet class last week. She's been waiting over a year to take ballet classes and she couldn't have been more excited. Of course, she needed a dance bag for her shoes so in true Brandy style, I procrastinated until the night before. No matter, it got done and she loved it!

That's her with the pink leotard, black skirt and ponytail. How grown-up she looked. She took it so serious and was always paying attention. And she absolutely loved it!

And then she donned her tap shoes for her first tap lesson! Yep, prepare yourself, more pictures.

Anyone take tap? Remember the Boogie Woogie?! They still teach it!

She makes my heart soar when I look at her. Such a sweet spirit she has.

Summer growing...

I love Summer. It's not my favorite season, that would be Spring and Fall. But the long days, sunshine and abundance of things growing pleases me to no end. We've started a small vegetable garden that is doing well.

The kids participated in planting and are helping me tend it.

They learn so much by doing these daily chores that come with growing plants.

It's a beautiful thing to see. As the vegetables bloom so do my children.

Back in a flash...or maybe a snail's pace....

Well, goodness, that was quite the break wasn't it? However, I'm back with lots of things to show off.

First off, I finished a few couch pillow covers a month or so ago. Here's one of them...

Some of the fabrics were new, some were scraps from Dearfii and some were vintage and/or repurposed. And finished off with two great vintage buttons. If I were a prideful person, I'd tell you just how stinking great I think this pillow is and just how chuffed I am with it!...but I am most certainly NOT that kind of person, so I'll just say that I'm happy with it and hope to make more soon.

Secondly, remember the guinea pig babies? You know, the ones our neighbor had us "babysit" while they went camping? And those two guinea pigs just happened to have their babies while they were gone. Yeah, that neighbor, she's a smart one. I just know she had it all thought out...."the guinea pigs are due to have their babies this week...let's go camping for the week and ask the neighbors with three small kids to babysit them while we're gone...there's no way they will be able to resist keeping a few of them after they've seen them being born!" Yep, she's a smart one all right. Me? Not so much.

See the little guy up there with the white streak on his head? That's Oreo. Here he is now at about 9mo. old.

We kept 4 of the babies. Two girls and two boys. Oreo is Aidan's favorite.

And I must admit that he is a cutie! Aidan likes to take them outside to eat the grass and dandelions out of my flower beds. Fine by me!!! Stinkin' dandelions are taking over around here. If I were a better person, I'd gather up the leaves and eat them in a salad or make tea with them or something like that. But I'm not, so I'll just continue to grumble about them whilst yanking them out and giving them to the guinea pigs. At least someone can get some joy out of them.

Hmmm, come to think of it, the abundance of dandelions may partially be mine and my kids fault. We're a little addicted to making wishes on the seed puffs...oops.

Vintage love

I get quite amazed and, to be quite honest, jealous, at the amount some bloggers get accomplished. Not only do they crank out glorious projects at what seems like an assembly line speed, they take gorgeous photos daily, edit, load and blog poetic inspiring prose. They are writing books, reading quality books, baking, sewing for themselves and their children, caring for their families, renovating homes.....HOW??????? how, how, how, how,HOW do they get it all done?!?!? Truly makes me feel like a slug sometimes.

Anyway, on to much better and inspiring topics! Here is a pic of the Ipod cozy's for 2 little sisters I made. Mom wanted them the same so they only difference I made was the button.

Some vintage goodies new to me! The towel, I picked up at a thrift store for $.10!! and the turquoise pyrex dish was given to me straight out of my MIL cupboards after I spied it hiding in there.

Anyone out there stamp much? I need to find a good quality ink to use on cardstock for hangtags, thank-you cards and such. There are so many different kinds!! Any suggestions?

Tea Party with Tad

I love spring. Though I could never pick a favorite season. Because Fall is spectacular as well. Spring is like a breath of fresh air. After being cold for a several months, spending entirely too much time within the confines of my home and doing what feels like double the amount of laundry due to all those extra layers, I begin to crave green sprouts shooting up from the ground and green tips on the trees. Warm sunshine on my face an abundance of outdoor playtime. I also seem to be having a rush of creativity...and an urge to buy a lot fabric! Oh, so many gorgeous fabrics out there. I just can't sew fast enough to use what I already have!

Last week we made an unexpected visit back to our hometown in GA. My FIL was taken by ambulance to the hospital due to sharp chest pain and passing out. After a couple nights in the hospital and an army load of tests, they think he has Hypoglycemia. It's not certain yet, but a heart cath and scans ruled out heart blockages and a pulmonary embolism. I was scared for him. Kris and I started dating at the ripe old age of 15 so I've been in their family for about 16 yrs now. After loosing my dad 9 yrs ago, Mr. Dennis is that much more special to me. I am so thankful that it doesn't look to be anything too serious. A pic from a few months back of Mr Dennis and Lilianne playing with balloon animals.

Speaking of dad's, yesterday would have been my dad's 60th birthday. I miss him so much. Happy Birthday Daddy!

Still no new photos :(. But flickr never disappoints! Aren't all these photos beautiful?! Such lovely colors...makes me smile.

I finished up the lounge pants. Other than my inability to thoroughly read directions, they worked out great! Love them. I whipped up a headband for my niece who turns 16 this week...thinking I'll make her a key fob and keyring as well. Wish I could show you pictures!! I have so many ideas floating around in my brain and on paper for things I want to make, but I have such a hard time deciding on what to make next and actually getting started. Anyone else experience that? Just too many ideas!

I'm tired of feeling guilt over my inability to post consistently. My life is just busy! So I've adopted the idea of "Blogging without Obligation"...you'll see the button on the right hand side of the blog. Very freeing I must say!

The willow trees are budding out here along our little stream and they are just beautiful. It even made it into the 70's here a few days ago!

I realize this post doesn't exactly flow. Jumping from topic to topic. Guess I'm feeling a little like that lately. Jumping from one thing to another...not a lot of time to stop and focus.

Digging in the photo memory banks...

I guess I'll be relying on old photos for my next few posts until I (and by I, I mean my husband!) figure out why I can't upload my photos from my cards. For now, I'll be digging up old photos to upload on flickr. Nothing like a little reminiscing! Found this one this morning of a much thinner me about 5 years ago. Definitely some excellent diet inspiration. This was taken at a lake in my hometown. Aidan has always enjoyed the water and wildlife. He had been "fishing" for minnows with his little green net. If memory serves correct, Aidan was 2 here and lilianne was probably 8 mo or so?. Our feet and steps look almost identical don't they? Funny

I have 2 pair of lounge pants in the works for me using the pattern in this book by the talented Amy Butler. One pair will be of the yellow/orange flower print in the lower left corner. The other is a blue and purple print on white. Both are vintage sheets picked up here and there. I RARELY make things for myself so I'm pretty excited about them.

Two ipod cozy's have been made. Skirts are on the agenda for my girls. Lilianne, 5, has decided that she will NOT be wearing pants or shorts this summer...maybe capri's occasionally. So skirts, dresses and bloomers are being planned out.

Life is going good. We're trying some new things with Aidan in his schooling and the amount of progress in the last two weeks has been incredible! So very pleased with it. Sarah is turning into quite the typical 3 yr old. Trying us on every angle and is finally potty trained! Yahoo! Haven't had to buy diapers for the first time in SEVEN years. Although, having said that, the baby bug has started nibbling on my heart. I find myself longing to hold a newborn babe...to clutch that sweet bundle at my breast and smell the sweet scent. sigh.... does that feeling ever go away? Guess we'll see what the next few months hold for us.

So I was sewing in my room when I glanced over and saw this....my tiny moment...

My Dad. He passed away almost 9 years ago from Melanoma skin cancer. He never got to see my children. I got pregnant with Aidan about 8 months after he died. I miss him so much and think about him EVERY day. I keep those pictures right beside me on my sewing table so he can watch over me and I can see him often.

So, what was I doing in my sewing room? Well, I'll show you...

Even though I haven't been blogging, I have tried to keep up with a few bloggers and their projects. 30 Tiny Moments was one of the big ones. So as of yesterday I joined the ranks of all those others trying to find those "tiny" moments to capture. In film and in memory. Yesterday I posted this picture as Day 1 in the flickr group. Today I post this...

It really is easy for me to completely ignore so much that goes on around me. I'm home EVERY day, ALL the time. with my kids. As a homeschooling mom I give up a lot. But I gain so much more. Constant time to see my kids smile, to laugh with them, to dance with them, to learn with them, to learn FROM them... yet,the days often seem to pass by in a blur...from one day to the next. I am so guilty of not noticing the "tiny moments"...not taking advantage and just being "with" them. I hope this little project will remind me to take a closer look. To enjoy and smile at the tiny moments, because they really are precious...

Unplanned Hiatus

Well, wow, that was quite unexpected break from blogging! I could give a multitude of excuses like: almost constant company staying with us, holidays and birthdays and a big surprise I've been working on, but I won't do that! Instead, I'm going to show something that the beautiful Robin over at The Queen of Perseverance sent to me back in December. I was the winner of a giveaway that she hosted. And boy, was I a winner! Not only did I receive one GORGEOUS necklace and watch, tote bag with an equally GORGEOUS cameo and a lavendar sachet, but 4 postcards and 2 ADORABLE creatures from Fluffy Flowers

Robin, I want you to know that I have adored wearing the necklace and watch and have received NUMEROUS compliments on them. The sachet didn't get photographed because, quite frankly, it's hidden in my skivvies drawer! I'm sorry to say the sweater kitty and mitten creature got in a bit of tussle upon arrival. My two daughters were fighting over them LOL! But don't worry, Mom stepped in and made it clear that they must share....with ME!! They reside in my sewing room and watch over me while I craft. Thank you sooooo very much for your generosity.

Christmas came and went, birthdays are out of the way, until May (my 31st!) that is. I've been busy sewing and schooling. Attending to life as it comes. Yesterday was a gorgeous day here as the temp got up to 71 degrees! We spent most of it outside enjoying the sunny skies

AND last, but not least, looks who's missing another front tooth! !LOL!

Don't you just love Christmas music? and Christmas decorations? and Christmas food? This is absolutely my most favorite time of year. There is just something about celebrating this holiday that brings me closer to my family. Lots more snuggling, giggles, family baking and days spent in our jammies crafting new decorations. sigh...

We are venturing out to get the tree tomorrow night or Sat. morning. Can NOT wait! We were never able to really go out and cut our own tree where we grew up, so last year was such a special treat for the kids (and me!) to wander around the tree farm and pick that "perfect" one to bring home. We are going back to the same place this year and are making it a tradition. Anyone out there get two trees? I am trying to convince the fam that we NEED two, you know, one for each level, right?!

Today I did a lot of cleaning so that we could focus on decorating over the weekend. We are hosting hubby's work holiday party next weekend so I've lots to do! I'm off to get the kiddos to bed now. I'll leave you with a pic of my gorgeous and super duper lovable kitty, Tad. He makes me smile every time I look into those blue eyes.

It's about time!!

Finally, I was able to download my pictures onto the 'puter! Of course, after numerous attempts, the hubby did it on his first try. Why does that always seem to happen?

There's lots for me to catch up on. First, I will post the pictures of my beautiful bounty of mail love from Jenna-lou that I received in early october(eek!) I was the incredibly lucky winner of a birthday giveaway she had to celebrate her 2oth birthday (so young and soooo talented!). I have used this gorgeous wristlet many many many times over the past month. As a matter of fact, I pulled it out of the mailbox on my way out thrifting that Sat. morning and promptly transfered my stuff over!

Of course, she added some beautiful notecards!

Isn't it gorgeous! Thank you so much Jenna! I looooove it. I am so sorry it's taken me so long to show it off.

The next week, I was also the lucky recipient of a give-away from Fiona! Check out her generosity and loveliness that she sent me! Lots of pictures becuase she sent me so many gorgeous scraps!

Beatiful card, pin-on pincusion, which has been pinned onto my ironing board and is used everytime I sew! Thank you so much Fiona! I can't wait to show you what I'm using them on! More pictures of all this loveliness is here

My grandmother, celebrated her 83rd birthday the end of October. We had a big family party for her. Lots of fun...family we haven't seen in a while, kids playing and a low-country boil...yummy! I whipped her up a new purse, with a matching wristlet (thanks for the inspiration Jenna-lou!) and key fob. She was thrilled and seemed to love it!

We recently had a 12 hour blackout due to a falling tree, so it became the perfect time to teach Aidan and Lilianne their first embroidery lessons. Aidan picked right up on it and loves it! He finished his first project...

then quickly set about working on his second...

Lilianne, needed some assistance. She's only 4 so I wasn't surprised. But she is doing great at it! Great bonding time for us.

There is much more for me to blog about and show you, but I've got to get off my rump and go get some groceries!

Hibernating

Still here...just hibernating. My computer is having serious issues with the big blue screen popping up several times a day. I think DH has it fixed, but now I'm having problems loading my photos onto the computer. Ugh...

Life is good around here... busy, but good. I've missed blogging. I've been doing some wall painting, more ripple crochet, sewing curtains, vintage pillowcase jammies and bags, craft projects with the kiddos, teaching the kids to embroider (can't wait to show you their projects!), lots of baking and then there's the usual stuff like school, cleaning and laundry.....busy, but good you know...

Wow, I am so sorry I haven't been around. After our short trip to our hometown, my mom and step-dad came for a week-long visit. Now we have something going on here at home that I am keeping a close watch on so I haven't had a chance to blog. Not to mention a certain special little boy is turning 7 tomorrow! And then there's Halloween...

Jenna and Fiona....I am horrified that I haven't had a chance to post about your wonderful things yet! Haven't even had the chance to load my pictures of them onto Flickr yet. I think of it everyday I promise and I am hoping to get the time to show them off by the weekend. Please know that it in now way dimishes my enjoyment of them!!!!!! Check back over the weekend everyone and see what cool postal love I have been blessed with!

I'm a busy bee

Life is crazy around here!! I am preparing for an out of town visit this weekend and then company coming next week for a week-long stay. Trying to get 100 pictures emailed to a family member that is taking me FOREVER!!! The first 30 went through so smooth, but now I keep getting failure messages even though some of them are actually getting through....and then there are the "server is busy, try again later" messages. AAARRRRRHHHH!!!!!

Anyhow, I have scads of things to show you and tell you about. Some mail love from gorgeous Jenna, thrifting purchases and new sewing projects. I want to whip up a tote for my Granny. We are celebrating her 83rd birthday this weekend. Any suggestions on shape and size? I don't think a wristlet would do as she usually carries a pretty big bag.

Thanks so much for all the wristlet love you all gave me yesterday! Nothing like a little positive encouragement. I have another one in the works. Changed the pattern a little yet again. Only one pleat, a little wider...maybe I'll have a completed pic for you tomorrow.

Aren't these colors beautiful?! These are all from my flickr favorites. If I HAD to pick a favorite color, I MIGHT could narrow it down to these four...yellow, red, green and blue....but I love aqua too...and pink... I told you I stink at picking favorites!

Not much time, Smallville is on and I don't want to miss it!lol. Completed another wristlet today...changed a few things on the pattern...boxed the bottom and changed the pleats. I'm not sure yet which way I like the pleats.

Decision making...

You know, #6 on my post yesterday is giving me some issues. I'm working on a wristlet pattern and am having more problems picking coordinating fabrics than I am anything else. Anyone else have that problem? Things would go so much quicker if I could just pick something up that strikes me and go with it. But noooo, I have to second-guess (and third-guess and fourth-guess and on and on and on!) myself and try it with something else.

Here's a little something else Birdie and I whipped up...another wristlet with matching key fob...

Interior

It measures about 7"x7"(6"on top). Is this a good size for a wristlet? Do you think 6" across the top is too small? I put a pocket in the first toile version I made, but it's such a small purse, it just seems pointless. Would you prefer a pocket in something this size? I guess since a large wallet is not likely to fit, you might want a space to stick some cash, cards or drivers license. hmmmmm...

I'm cutting out another now and am about to get started on it. See ya!

7 Things about me....

Ok, you back now? I've been tagged to tell you 7 things about me you don't know. So here we go

#1 I wanted to be a ballerina. I started dance lessons at age 4, but didn't get serious about it until I was about 12. We had a professional male ballet dancer (Mr. Carey, wherever you are, I MISS YOU!) move to our small town and open up a dance studio. I started taking classes from him and it changed me. I was obsessed with ballet...I danced, I read, I watched, and I talked about ballet. I was actually pretty good and won many competitions, but when I turned 15 something else changed me. And that something is.....

#2 Kris. We were 15 and in the 10th grade when we started dating. He was my first (and only since) kiss. He was my new obsession and I couldn't bear the thought of leaving him for a career in ballet. We married at 20 and had our first child at 23. We both turned 30 this year. It feels like we practically grew up together!

#3 I was a majorette in high school. Twirled since I was 4 too. Captain my junior year.

#4 One of my favorite TV shows is Smallville. I'm embarrassed to say that! Seriously, I love it and live for Thursday nights. I don't think I've ever talked or heard of another adult that likes it. I certainly don't mention it to anyone. But good grief that Tom Welling is GORGEOUS! I swear I'm not some teeny-bopper wannabe!

#5 I hate to clean. I love to cook, organize and decorate, but I loathe cleaning. Always have. Imagine I always will. I wish I was one of those people that enjoys it or even does it without thinking. That is NOT me. I have to force myself.

#6 I can NOT pick a favorite of anything. Seriously. I am a horrible decision-maker and second guess everything. Fav. food?....can't pick. Fav. color?....can't choose from them. Fav. move?....can't pick! Poor Kris lol, I'm always asking him what I should do, what I should wear, which I should buy.

#7 I've always wanted to be an artist of some kind. It' almost a desperation. I want to be good at something artistic. As a child, I wanted to be painter, As a teenager, it was ballet, then photography...it's a never-ending process of learning for me. I've never felt like I had one true talent. And I sooooo want to feel that way. I dabble at drawing, crochet, embroidery, sewing and photography, but don't feel especially gifted in any of it. And there is so much more I want to learn!

Our neighbor came yesterday to take the guinea pigs home. We decided to keep three so she left one of the mommies to care for them for 4 weeks. We kept the blind one, Helen, the smooth-coated on that I thought would die, Marshall, and the black and white one, Oreo. I had a hamster when I was a kid, but I didn't really enjoy him. He bit too much. Never thought I'd have another "rodent". But these guinea pigs are adorable! They munch, munch, munch on all kinds of veggies and make the sweetest noises.

I was able to do a little more sewing today on Birdie. I just love her! Maybe I can get it finished and show you some pics tomorrow. Need to get busy on some crochet scarves and hats for fall and winter. Anyone know any good one-skein patterns? I have a skein of Noro Silk Garden yarn. 100 meters. Can I make a scarf with only one skein?

Now, I'm off to crochet on the ripple blanket and watch Bones and House with Kris.

Eight new babies in our house and a lucky streak....

Yep, you read that right! Eight new babies are living in my home. Let me introduce you...

But, first, a little explanation might be in order. A week and a half ago our neighbor asked us to watch her 2 heavily pregnant guinea pigs.

She warned me that they might have their babies while they were here. Well, she's supposed to come pick them up today and I was disappointed that we weren't going to get to see them be born. Thankfully, yesterday after naptime, Aidan came bounding upstairs out of breath telling me that "Mocha" was having her babies. We ran down and got to see her have her next 2 as well. "Silverware" (I didn't name them LOL!) had her three last night. So now there are 6 new guinea pig babies in our house. Wanna see them?

The very last one born was having problems. I checked on him about 2 hours after he was born and he seemed very lethargic and weak. He was also getting trampled over by all the others. So I took him out, rubbed him in a towel and laid him on my chest while Kris and I watched a movie. I really expected him to die while he was laying with me, but by the time the movie was over he had perked up and seemed fine. Here he is.

He was the only smooth-coated one born and now he's my favorite...well, along with the one born with her eyes closed(all the others were born with them open. By the way, does anyone know anything about guinea pigs? Will her eyes open or is she blind?) Needless, to say they are special to me now. Think we might have to make room in our home for those two.

Wondering about the 2 babies I haven't mentioned yet? Well, let me introduce you to "Birdie Bernina"and her serger brother "Bernie Bernina"!

You all know I have been researching sewing machines since the great disaster...well, I happened to check the newspaper on Friday and noticed an ad for a Bernina 1630. I call and Mrs. Betty (75yrs old) told me that she had bought it in anticipation for retirement 10-12yrs ago, but never got to use it. She has eye problems now and can't see well enough to sew. This machine had NEVER been used. NEVER even been threaded! "Bernie" had only been used twice to serge some towels. Also, this Horn sewing table and matching roller chair came with it!

Unbelievable. I got a really REALLY REALLY great deal on all of it and the lady was thrilled that it was going home with someone that enjoys sewing for her children. Hooked "Birdie" up at home asap and she sings as sweet as a songbird! The smart and industrious Birdie has even completed her first project!

It's a little rough in spots but that's just because we're still getting aquainted, Birdie and I. But I think we're going to be the best of friends!

And if that wasn't enough, I've somehow, for the first time in my life, hit upon a lucky streak. I recently won this completely charming PIF(pay it forward) Toile tote from the very talented Jen at Persephone's Awakening.

It's made from thrifted toile fabric and is oh so soft. Very "comfy cottage"!

I've been meaning to show you all but the aforementioned disaster has had me distracted. Thank you Jen. I compeletly love it! And now that Birdie has joined the family, I'll be whipping up an item to use for my PIF.

Another week gone by. And still no sewing machine...sigh... I think I've found the machine I want. This Janome. My hometown in GA quoted me a price several hundred dollars cheaper than my local dealership so I guess I'll pick one up when we go home for a visit in 2 weeks...2 weeks...sigh... I test drove one at the dealership this week and boy is it nice. So many really cool features! Quite the upgrade from my Singer. I am on the fence about checking out the Bernina's. We have 2 dealerships each an hour from here...I may decide to check them out this weekend. Just can't decide.

What are your plans for the weekend? We started painting upstairs last weekend so I think we'll be doing more of that. The kitchen(green) is done and we're about 1/3 of the way done in the dining room (yellow and red)..After that comes the livingroom(yellow).

Oh, the photo above is some morning glories the kids and I planted earlier this summer. Though you can't see it, they are growing up the spindles of Aidan's crib he used when he was a baby. I have one planter like this on each side of the garage. The crib fell apart and I thought this would be a good use for it!

Hopefully I can check out some yard sales or thrift stores Saturday morning! Hope you all have a great weekend!

Beware falling cabinets!

Ugh....ugh......ugh....ughhhhhhhh.,......

This weekend I was in my sewing room showing DH my cool thrifted finds of the day. I reached up to open the metal cabinet that hangs over my sewing table when it falls completely off the wall and lands right into my arms and on my sewing table. I scream and my husband stares in horror at the sound of my vintagle glass jars that were on top of the shelf shattering all around me. I immediately start crying because of my pretty jars and my vintage glass button collection...my lamp is broken...and then I notice it...that huge metal cabinet is still perched on my Singer...we lift it off and I completely loose it. The bobbin threader thing on top is bent and smashed into the machine and the case is broken off the front of it...big crocodile tears ensue as Kris tries to make me feel better. We sweep the glass off the floor and with each broken button and shard of pretty blue jar glass I let out another pathetic moan and sniffle. Amazingly enough, I only got one small cut on my finger to go with my broken heart. I am so very thankful that those jars didn't fall on me or Kris. Not to mention if it had fallen when one of my babies were in the room! I don't even want to think of that!

I really don't normally cry at stuff like this, but I was devastated. I've been working so hard on making my room all pretty and fun. I had just gotten my big order of metal hardware for bag-making that afternoon. Ugh....Ugh...Ugh...

So now I'm in the market for a new sewing machine and have no idea where to start. I want a good one, that will sew through very heavy fabrics and layers and withstand lots of use. Any suggestions?

Good grief, I can't believe it's Wednesday (eek, I had Thursday typed on here all morning before Kris informed that it was actually Wednesday!) all ready! Time just flies by when I'm not paying attention. Still working on the twirly skirts. Also working on some wristlets. Just don't have any photos to show for it!

I do, however, have some photos to show from our time in school yesterday. We were at our table that we use for homeschooling (but we are also aften known to do it out in grass or in the floor or in the bed LOL) and we had a spur of the moment photo shoot of Aidan's frog (dubbed Speedy) he caught out in the stream on Tuesday. This is going to be pic heavy!

And then of course Sally had to be brought in....

Gotta love a snaggletooth! And geewhiz does that boy need a haircut!

Ever feel overwhelmed from all the cool ideas out there in blogland and the cyber world? Things like this, this, this and this....oh and also this! So many things I want to try and soooo little time to actually do it.

My girls picked out some new fabric and requested a skirt so this twirly skirt is in the works... Puppies for Sarah and pink for Lili.. Hopefully pics will follow in the next day or two.

I'm anxiously awaiting the UPS man today. I've ordered some crafting books and can not wait to get my grubby hands on them! Have I ever mentioned how much I love books? Fiction, biography, how-to, craft, parenting, history, vintage....sigh...love them all. And don't even get me started on my magazine obsession....

OH! And I've another question for those of you that make handbags and the like. Where do you buy your metal accessories (d-rings, buckles, latches, magnetic snaps, etc)?

Double rainbows and the stupid Tooth Fairy

Sorry for my lack of posting over the last few days. The in-laws were in town and we were busy having lots of fun. Friday night after a day of rain we were treated by the most spectacular double rainbow I've ever seen! It was so bright and there were 2 full rainbows. These pics don't do it justice.

We also arrived home to a little boy missing his top front tooth! His "Papa" and he were wrestling and his very loose tooth finally gave up the fight and fell out. And then the dang moronic Tooth Fairy completely forgot to come! Horrible wretch that she is. Doesn't that nominate me for the worst mom award ever?! Stupid Tooth Fairy had to pay interest the next night.

Went to the Sat. night entertainment again and had lots of fun. We even had to take a light jacket!! In the 40's here last night...aaaaaahhhhh..... My mother in law and I took the girls out fabric shopping and thrifting Saturday afternoon while the boys went fishing. Found some really great goodies!

Foggy Mornings

Don't you just love those wispy foggy mornings? I adore them...although, that might technically be because I get to enjoy it from my front porch swing and not the highway. Coffee in hand, slight chill in the air hinting at fall, kids still dreaming on their pillows and Tad nestled up close. Did you know that the Smokey Mtns. got their name because of the fog?

Our stream runs under the bridge there.

"Pickin on the Square"

Every Saturday night here in the small town where we live a weekly concert is held on our downtown square. Different genres of music is played (although mostly bluegrass, country and 1950-60's music). They call it "Pickin on the Square" and it's completely free to the public. 6-7pm is "Open Mike" and then the festivities begin. We decided to take the kids last night to listen to the bluegrass music and treat them to a funnel cake and cotton candy. We had such a good time! I was astounded at how many people showed up with their chairs and blankets to enjoy some banjo "pickin"! Here a few pics I wanted to share with you!

The cloggers are always entertaining with their fluffy skirts. I just love seeing the older men and women dancing!

We had a front row seat since we got their so early. Notice the painting on the trash can? Every trash can in our downtown has local artists' paintings on them...isn't that cool?! You can also catch a glimpse of our town clock and the view of the Smokey Mtns. in the background if you look closely.

Catching up....

First, I'll let you in on a portion of what I've been doing....

My oldest daughter's granny-square is finished except for some of those pesky yarn ends. We love how it turned out!

I've started on a ripple afghan for my youngest daughter using the same color yarns. I'm using the soft waves pattern from from Jan Eaton's book 200 Ripple Stitch Patterns. You've most likely seen this pattern being used beautifully here and here. Not using any pattern for the colors, just picking what I like and trying to make purple a predominant color as that is her favorite.

A few quick and easy pillow covers for the downstairs den...the true colors aren't quite so bright!

And now... for the introductions...

These are my babies... on the left is Lilianne. She as girly as they come and has turned into such a sweetheart. So compassionate and considerate. Although she does have a touch of drama queen in her LOL. Next, in the middle, is my Sarah. She's that infamous age of 2.This girl is a barrel of laughs and 2 barrels of trouble! She keeps me on my toes needless to say. And on the right, is my oldest, Aidan. He's six now but turns 7 next month. Give that kid a fishing pole and his bow and arrow and he's set for the day. The ONLY time you get him to slow down is when he's fishing. Thank God we have a small stream in our yard so he can fish for minnows and crayfish all day long!

And this is me, Brandy, and my hubby, Kris. I am one of those that loathes pictures of myself so you probably won't see many of me lol! We've been married for 10 years and were high school sweethearts at the age of 15. He was and will always be the love of my life!

Neighbors and Introductions

I hope everyone had a fun 4th of July! We attended a pool party at our neighbors home. There were lots of families there and the kids had a blast. This kind of thing is so new to me...this having neighbors that socialize and other kids coming over to play. For a lot of my life, I've lived "in the stix" so to speak and while we had neighbors that we spoke to and waved to, the daily interactions like happening here didn't happen so much. Thankfully, I really like all of them and the kids all seem nice. I tend to be on the shy side so I just chalk it up to character building for me. And that's always a good thing.

That cute little pup above is the newest addition to our household. She is a stray that our neighbor found in the middle of Main St. in town last week. She was awfully skinny and scared. So we took her in and have been enjoying her company ever since. We named her Hazel. She's a puppy but I'm not sure how old. She really is a sweetie and lives for belly rubs.

This little scamp is Captain "Hokie". We adopted him from the shelter almost 2 years ago. He's a Jack Russell mix but really isn't high-strung like that breed typically is. He is a hunter though. He's killed many a snake, bunny, skunk, baby bird and mouse. Ruthless that one. But a sweeter dog there never was. Very protective. Also lives for belly rubs and will cower for a week if you so much as look at him harshly. I took this pic of him after introducing him to Hazel. I think he was feeling a little under appreciated and slighted. Can you tell? lol. But all is good and they are great buddies now. Yep, Hokie and Hazel.....guess we'll be taking Hazel to the vet soon to see about getting her spayed so as not to have any backyard "antics"...not ready to give that talk to the kids yet LOL!

I have permission from the protective hubby to start posting pics and names of our family so I'll be doing that over the next few days. I know...exciting right?! So stay tuned......

Can I have an extra hour today God?

Time is such a scarce commodity these days. Trying to find a balance between parenting, being a wife, housekeeper, cook and school teacher is a daunting task. Especially when all I seem to want to do is peruse my magazines (an obsession of mine), read a book, read blogs or work in my flowers. Responsibilities of daily living just will NOT get off my back! Seriously though, it is hard trying to balance all that being a stay at home homeschooling mom entails. What with all the crafting and hobbies I really want to do while I should be scrubbing the floor, checking on the 2 yr old or cooking dinner....which reminds me...what am I going to do with that chicken sitting out on my counter?!

So, I've come to a stand-still with the granny square blanket. My mind is on what all I need and want to do around this new house that I just can't seem to start up on it again. It's there waiting on me...taunting me really.

I thought I'd show you a few of the treasures I'd picked up lately while in the antique shops and thrifting...

I bought 17 old books from a man at a garage sale that I stopped at. All for the price of $15. About 4 or 5 are from the 1940's but the rest are from 1876 up to 1920. Some really cool books. I found a scrap of fancy dress fabric in one of the books and some postcards from the Poconos in the 70's in another. I love leafing through them. I'll show you some details of my favorites in another post.

A crewel work pillow I picked up for $6...actually, I think snatched up would be the better word. Do you see the little squirrel there? I love everything about this...the colors and the design.

Another piece of crewel work. This is a replica of a stamp. I loved it when I saw it, but what I found on the back sealed the deal for me. Whoever had framed it had attached a paper envelope. Inside was the design sheet for the pattern and a 2nd place Oklahoma State Fair Ribbon. Also the name and address of the lady who made it. It stated that she was 87 yrs old. I love picking up things that have a story. I can daydream and wonder about the sweet old lady that worked so hard on this and how proud she must have been with her ribbon. Obviously she had it framed and had the framer put the matching envelope on the back. It now resides in my new bedroom and looks perfect!

And lastly, progress on my sewing room. The room is finished being painted. Still more furniture to paint white and then I need to get the floor down. I'm dying to get it all done, but my energy level is just that....dying. Hopefully soon though.........................................................................................................

..........................................Well, I had to quickly abandon in the middle of this post to take my 6 yr DS to the emergency room. He had a fishing hook go through his leg. So we are back home enjoying a big bowl of ice cream with sprinkles, syrup and cherries to celebrate his being a big boy while they worked on him... I need an extra large one to calm the nerves after hearing him scream bloody murder when it first happened!!

Well, we're moved in and unpacked for the most part. Vacation is over and we are moving onto the renovation phase. Picking out paint and thrifting/antiquing for some new things. I have lots of new really cool things I've picked up, but no pics as of right now. I'll have to work on that. I haven't done a stitch of sewing since we moved, but I bought primer, paint and vinyl tiles to make one of the unfinished basement rooms my very own sewing/craft room! Perhaps I can take some before and after pics and post them. So hopefully I can get back into the crafting groove within a week or two. I have finished the camo 'ghan, well, all except for sewing in the ends. So I can get started on DD#3's ripple 'ghan now. I am a little over halfway finished with DD #2's granny' 'ghan. There is so much to do lately, but all really enjoyable. Planting flowers and yard care, antiquing/thrifting, decorating and planning...sounds yummy to me!

Yeah, that's me breaking out in the iconic song from Annie. I've been singing it all morning. Dh was wincing on his way out the door. I have American Idol talent I tell you.

So, I'm basically done with most of the packing. Not all, but most. Today is cleaning day, and boy do I have a big job ahead of me! We close on the house tomorrow and start moving our things in shortly after. The big moving day won't be until Saturday however. I'm not sure how long we'll be without internet service so I won't be blogging until we are back up and running.

Finished MIL bag yesterday. It looks an awful lot like a diaper bag, but oh well, it's finished! I used timtex for the first time. Still not sure about it. I'm sure it would help if I actually used a pattern instead of making my own up! Lots of seam ripping and it is nowhere in the same solar system of being perfect. Oh, well, lots of love went into it, right? Well, that and lots of cursing.

that pretty much sums up my days lately...with some intermittant breaks to hunt down some food for the kiddos or collapse on the couch to crochet or play with Sally. hmmm....need to get that tote finished for MIL too....and mother's day gifts....and go pick up some more boxes...and go get a few groceries...and call the power company...and have our address changed...and vacuum...and dust...and pre-order tickets for Sea World for our vacation...and pay bills...and...and...and......

What a difference a week makes eh? New feathers and much fatter....mama Chickadee sure stays busy gathering foods for her babies.

A newly acquired pet for our household...DS promptly named her Sally. I think DS is in love LOL!

My sewing machine is back in working condition and humming away! My MIL birthday was Sunday so I am working on a tote for her. First time using Timtex, and there is a lot of seam ripping going on LOL! She'll be here this weekend to help us move so I've got to get it done by then...not to mention mothers' day gifts. eek!

20 grannies completed! I hope to be finished with the camo ghan by Friday.

AND.....only 3 whole days left before we close on the house and start moving!! Steadily getting packed up around here. Dh even helped over the weekend so I feel pretty relaxed about getting it all done by Friday.

Still buried waist high in boxes and packing tape. DH comes home today thank goodness!

I found these adorable dishcloths at Walmart the other day. The applique red cherry caught my eye and I loved them so much I bought all 4 of the red sets they had and 2 of the green pea. I am thinking to make an apron from them. Haven't got it worked out yet. Course, don't have anything to sew it with so I'm in no hurry. Still waiting to hear from the guy fixing my machine to see what is wrong with it. I'm not a very patient person so I am chomping at the bit to order a new one. But, I really need to wait and see what is going on with the old one first I suppose.

I am getting so excited about the new house. Anxious and to get everything moved in so I can FINALLY make a home. This will be our 12th move in 10 years of marriage. And I think this will be for keeps! For a long, long loooong time anyhow. Can't wait to hang curtains and pictures and make pillows. Plant flowers and a garden. All that stuff. This time I can do what I love and not have to worry about resale! I'm actually a little disappointed that we're leaving for vacation a week after moving in, but I know we'll have a good time. There's just so much I am looking forward to doing you know? So 6 more days until we close on the house and we can start hauling stuff across town! I really am enjoying this blog. It lets me explore my creative side, let's me be a girly girl and is just a little special "spot" just for me. Those things are sometimes hard to achieve in the midst of everyday family chaos. Things are busy right now. Busy packing and cleaning. DH left yesterday for out of town business and won't be back until Friday afternoon. That puts me and the 3 kiddos packing up this pigsty household all alone. Ever tried to pack with a 6, 4 and 2 yr old wanting to help? Well, they don't technically want to help...they want to do it all themselves! Frustration sets in about 10 minutes after starting, then anxiety, then panic, then "crazy mama" emerges. So we take a break for a snack and I try to sneak off and get some packing done by myself!

The fire down south is still going and no rain in sight. Surely soon they'll have a downpour!

We have some baby Chickadee's in our birdhouse. We open it up every Sunday to take a quick picture so we can compare to last weeks and see how much they're changing. These are from this past Sunday

Got some new fabrics...although my sewing machine is still broken so looking at them just makes me sad! Considering getting a new machine.. Thinking about this Janome...anyone have a Janome? Good?... bad? Any recommendations on a new machine?

And here's my gorgeous kitty Tad showing off the grannies. There are 12 completed (well, I need to sew in the ends) and many more to be made. Fire still raging and other updates

I can't believe it's been over a week since I last posted. Quite a few things going on. First off, the fire is still raging down in south GA. There is a video on youtube.com that shows what is going on down there. It is a tribute to Camden Co firefighters ( FIL and BIL are not Camden Co. firefighters ---Camden Co. , and SEVERAL others has been called in to help). However, in the video is a scene where fire trucks are racing through smoke to get to a new fire. In the leading truck is my FIL. He was driving, leading the following trucks through near to 0 visibility situations. So scary to see him in so much danger. The fire has burned over 65,000 acres now and is still out of control. The picture above is one that appeared in a newspaper. Please say a prayer for them!

In other, less scary, news...we will be closing on our new house in 2 weeks. I'll start packing this weekend. Dh will be going out of town for 4 days next week. I'm really excited about the new move, but nervous too. I'll have one week to get us moved in and unpacked before we head out on a week vacation to Orlando, FL. Yikes!

My sewing machine is not working. aaaarrrrhhh!!! It is making some horrible knocking noise when I press the pedal. I had one seam left to sew on Mom's second wristlet and it went all haywire on me. No clue what is going on.

I made this clutch from a $.25 clearance place mat from Walmart. Can't beat that! Put a beaded dangle on the zipper pull. It also has a dividing center. It suits mom a little more I think. She wears lots of natural brown shades.

I've also got DS' camo afghan almost finished. Maybe 3 more skeins and it will be done. So, I couldn't stand it any longer. I'm joining the Granny Along today! I've got 8 squares done already. They are large squares, 9 rows, and I really don't know how many I'm going to need yet. The colors are very bright and fun. I think I need another natural shade of green though.

I using mostly Caron Simply Soft yarns. I just couldn't justify using expensive (to me anyway!) yarns. It needs to be washable and soft since she's 4 and this fit the bill. I'll be using the same yarns and colors for 2yr DD's ripple blanket as well.

There are a few other things I want to blog about, but I can't just now. Maybe later today I can edit them in.

In-laws and library bags

My inlaws were evacuated yesterday, but everything is fine so far with the homes. FIL and BIL were able to go home for a few (a very few) hours early this morning for some sleep, but are back at it again by mid-morning.

DH had to be at work at 6am this morning so we had an early wakeup alarm at 5am. I really should get up that early every morning as opposed to 6:45am. I was able to drink my coffee and play on the computer for about an hour before DS woke up. I also got to finally get my library bag put together. I home school and my kids are 6, 4 and 2 so when we visit the library we usually check out LOTS of books. So not only am I making them their own book bags, I made myself a large one! Here it is on the right. Made it from some material handed to me from my mom. It was actually used in some curtains we had in the home I grew up in. I'll be making her a clutch out of the same material. Red stripe body, with a pieced together strip of coordinating fabrics and a khaki interior (on old tablecloth I had).

I originally had two handles in mind, but then I considered that I have 3 kids hands that need to be held when visiting the library, so I opted for a longer strap that I could wear messenger bag style. I think that will be a lot more practical.

The lining was a khaki tablecloth I had. It had a neat little detail along the edges that I took advantage of. I put one large pocket on one side of lining and a double pocket on the other. I has three layers of material so it has a great weighty feel to it and is super soft. It's not as bright as it appears in photos.

This week is turning into quite a stressful time. Yesterday I watched with horror the reports coming out of Virginia Tech. About this time last year my DH turned down a job that would have had him working in that very building. I am so very grateful for the circumstances that caused him to decide not to take it. Blessings in disguise. I feel so sad for the families of those kids and professors. And for all the others that have to replay what happened. My heart really goes out to them. Lots of prayers going that way.

There are some very large forest fires burning now in my hometown in GA. My father-in-law and brother-in-law are both firefighters. My 22 yr old BIL has only been a firefighter since Jan but he loves it. Yesterday, he got hemmed in alone with no way out. My MIL was at home listening in on FIL radio and heard him (FIL) yelling "he's hemmed in! he's hemmed in!". Thankfully they got him out and they went on about their heroic business but it is just so scary to think of how fragile life is. How quickly it can be taken away. It is so dry there in my hometown and they are having major issues containing these fires. And winds were very gusty yesterday. One of them is VERY close to my in-laws home and my BIL's home. So not only are they fighting these fires, but it is very likely they'll lose their homes to them. Firefighteres really are so undervalued and underpaid. Needless to say, we are sitting by the phones waiting to hear from them and praying for them. Wish there was something I could do for them. *****MIL just called and she is at home with SIL wiating to be alerted to move their vehicles and such. She's packed up and ready to go if she needs to....please say a prayer for them!!

I have lots of other, mostly financial, stresses gong on now as well. We're right in the middle of buying our house, tax scares (thought we were going to have to pay in) and various other mundane things. I guess I just have a lot on my mind and thought I needed to "get it out there". Thought I would post a few pics that I love that I've taken a over the last year or so because looking at them makes me smile.

It snowed here again last night. Craziness! Dh and the two older kids were outside trying to catch snowflakes with their tongues. I sat inside with the 2 yr old and a cup of coffee trying not to grumble lol. Just three months ago I was getting impatient because it seemed it would never snow. Never knew I was so fickle lol.

Needless to say, between the cold weather and our pinching pennies, we spent a quiet weekend at home. I rather enjoyed it! Got a few easy projects done in the evenings and was able to get a couple more rows done on the camo crochet. Even managed to have the time to read a little!

I made a sewing machine cover for my little friend. Notice anything familiar about it? I used the cute placemats I found recently at a local antique store. I love the color and the pink scolloped edges. Just stitched them together since I didn't want to do any cutting on them. Attached some pretty ivory ribbons for the closures on the sides. I really like how it turned out. Simple, pretty and thrifted!

We also needed a new plastic bag holder so I whipped one up. Not sure how happy I am with it at the moment. I like the colors, it's not quite as vibrant as it looks in the photo, but It just seems like it's missing something...or......something.....

Also, have another work in progress...the kids and I need bookbags for library visits. Since we homeschool, library visits are frequent and we check out a lot of books. This one will be for me and I've already got the kiddos planned out. Hopefully I can get them whipped up this week. I'll be trying some applique for the first time, so hopefully I won't screw it up!

"it's ALMOST what I wanted Mom".....

The kids have been after me to sew them a stuffed animal. So I instructed them to draw me what they wanted...the 6yr old drew me a complicated lizard with long claws and multi-colored scales, uhhh, yeah. right...next!...the four year old drew me a bear (well, really a big fat circle lol), and with some assistance, the 2 yr old drew a puppy. Soooo, 6r DS and I agreed to cut out a pre-existing lizard from some fabric and do the best we can with it and 4 yr dd and I jointly drew something somewhat resembling a bear.

So, onward I go.....with all three leaning on or hovering over me (seriously, does this drive anyone else batty?!), I went to work cutting out the puppy from dd's chosen fabric...tye-dyed fleece. Stitched it up, stuffed it and sewed on some eyes and a nose and a ribbon for a tail. "Puppy" was squealed over and immediately taken to show brother and sister. Here is Puppy in all her handmade glory....she's dancing there, hence the odd posture!

On to the next....4 yr dd and I cut out some pink fleece and get to work. Sewed her up, stuffed her (dd made it halfway through the stuffing only to abandon me for Barney on tv, ugh), attached some eyes and a nose and made a button for a tail. He was promptly dubbed the title of "Cotton Candy" and given a big hug.

Last, 6 yr DS and I debated over that lizard. We came to a mutual agreement and got to work. He helped pin and cut him out then we headed to the sewing machine. I zig-zagged the edges and DS stuffed him. Finished him off and we were done! Shew! My nerves were seriously frazzled and I was quickly becoming that loud mama that all the neighbor kids fear. Handed it over to DS and asked him what he thought....."it's ALMOST what I wanted"

priceless...just what every mom wants to hear. lol Anyway, here he is in all his colorful splendor...

Spring purse and wallet

I needed a new spring purse, so instead of going out and buying one(we're making our pennies dangerously squeezed and stretched until we close on the house!), I made one myself. And I am pretty darn proud of it! I made a wallet to match and learned lots of new stuff in the process!

The camo crochet progress is at a definite slower pace. You might say at a "turtle's pace". But, as my DS and I say "Be The Turtle!" In one of our home school lessons this past year, we learned about perseverance and just how much of it a turtle has. So, I'm being the turtle and slowly but surely getting it done!

I have several exciting (well, to me anyway!) things to blog about today. First, my wonderful DH, babysat for me Sat. afternoon so I could go grocery shopping (ah aha ahem, and yarn store and antique store AND walmart). I found some awesomely exciting goodies at the antique store!! Want to see? Hope so, because I can't wait to show them off!

Firt we have a Montgomery Ward Junior typrewriter in AQUA! In perfect condition and just as adorable as it looks! My kids love it, I LOVE it! Underneath, the typewriter are 4 pink and cream polkadot placemats. Also a light blue small square tablecloth embroidered in daisies on all four sides.

Next, 4 sweet hankies:

See those white and yellow fish there? too cute.

1/2 price jars with lids and a working white milk glass lamp. With decoupaged shade that I'm not too crazy about, maybe it will grow on me or I may change it. Easy switch if I do.

And, last, but certainly not least is this small set of cups and saucers for, get this, $3.35!! Fell in LOVE with that blue color and the shape of the teacup.

Needless, to say, I had a great time to myself there at The Attic!

Now, on to actual crafting news! I made my very first clutch for my mom. I really like the way it turned out. I hope she does. Lots of "firsts" for me in this project. Big, mondo huge special thanks to Twelve22 for her zippered pouch tutorial and to Echoes of a dream for the crochet flower tutorial (I didn't do it exactly like hers because I wanted it to be smaller). Made it MUCH easier for me to figure out what I was doing!

I made the flower a pin so she can take it off if she likes. Does it look childish to you? I'm a little nervous about showing it to her to see if she likes it. The strap is changeable so that she can tote is as a little bag, through belt loops or as a clutch over her wrist. I made a little beaded pull on the zipper prong since it was so small. It's not perfect and is a little wonky in areas, but I'm super proud! Makes me feel a little like "Super Woman" LOL!

Yikes, I just found my 2 yr old eating coffee soaked rice krispies so I guess I need to stop gushing and get back to reality!

Summer pants and pretty papers

I finished up a pair of pants for each of my DD's. My girls are shaped so differently and I ended up using the same size 2 pattern for my both my 4yr old and 2 yr old. I need to make 4yr old's a little longer and 2yr old's a little longer in the stride. Want to see them? I thought they turned out pretty cute. Haven't finished the shirts yet. Actually, upon looking at these pics, I may make 4yr DD a larger size and not just longer. What do you think?

I've been comtemplating on what colors to decorate the girls room in once we move. DS's will, of course, be camo. Pink is definitely a favorite so that will be a bulk of the color in the room. I found this piece of scrapbook paper that I had forgotten I had and really love it. Do you like it? I LOVE the colors! Bright, but soft and girly at the same time. There's two or three different shades of green, two shades of aqua, two shades of pink, a sunny yellow and white. Isn't it gorgeous?! But I want to incorporate a little robin's egg blue as well.

I've gotten a few more rows done on the camo crochet. I'd say I'm near halfway done. I really hope to get started on the granny 'ghan before we move. I think I'll use those colors in the papers for their blankets. OH! I forgot to mention that I was invited to a sewing group on Tuesday. It was great! There were only 3 other moms there, but the kids got to play while we sewed. All homeschoolers. LOVED IT!! They do it every Tuesday at 12:30pm so I'll definitely be going back! I need to cut out a few more sets of pants so I can hopefully get them sewed up during the meeting. Maybe I can get started on mom's purse now assuming this house doesn't turn to chaos like it so often does!

I am really enjoying this crafting blog. I am finding that I am looking for the beautiful in everything. The details of even the mundane.

My back is much better. Still not 100%, but I'm getting there. The Swamp festival was cool. Didn't get to do much browsing and shopping (sniff, sniff) like I was hoping as I came away with nothing but balloons for the kids lol. However, lo and behold, when we arrived at my mom's house, she has lots of goodies for me!

Back Pain SUCKS!!!

**Copied from yesterday's post to ask again**....We will be moving into our new home in a month and I have been contemplating furniture placement and room designation. I want my own crafting/sewing area or room. There will be a small room, maybe 10x10 with no windows that is a possibility. Also, the laundry room is huge so I could put it in there, but again no windows. Are there moisture or heat issues that I should consider with having it in the laundry room? How important is natural light? There are various places throughout the house that I could use a corner of...master bedroom and large den are obvious choices. Anyone have a suggestion? Where do you have your sewing/crafting area? Where would be your ideal place?

I have done something to my back. I was on the phone yesterday with my SIL when I noticed my back was hurting a little. Over the course of the next 30 min it started REALLY hurting. Sharp pains in my very lower back. Can't bend over. The only time I get relief is when I lie flat on my back. Today is a little better, Dh has gone to get me a heating pad and those thermal pads for your back to see if they help. I was so looking forward to going to visit family this weekend. They are having "Swamp Fest" this weekend. It's a festival celebrating the Okefenokee Swamp, lots of crafts and stuff. We were supposed to be leaving at lunch time today but I'm not sure I can sit for 7 hours in the car. Guess we'll see how it goes this morning.

In other crafting news, I sewed the pants on DD's capris' wrong...ugh. I now have lots of seam ripping to do. Maybe a good job to do while riding if we do go today huh? Certainly didn't get a chance to work on moms' clutch purse yesterday. My super sweet 6 yr DS was a god-send yesterday. He helped me with laundry and giving the girls baths and anything else I needed. I owe him something super special! Well, gotta go hobble off and see what I can get done around here! I'll leave you with a few photos from 2 summers ago taken at my inlaws where we are supposed to be going this weekend.

**Well, it looks like we're going. Wish me luck. Dh's coworker is loaning us one of those car seat cover things that heats and massages. I'm armed with my 800mg Motrin, heating pad and stick-on heating pads. I do feel like it is much better than yesterday so I'm hoping that will continue. Still hobbling, but I can bend over now! Hope they have some good stuff at the festival tomorrow! Have a great weekend!

Sewing to celebrate Spring!

It's so beautiful and warm here and my girls have NO shorts or capris yet. A lot of the fabric I bought over the weekend was for spring and summer clothes for them. I started on a capri outfit for my 4 yr old daughter today. She is VERY thin and tall and it's bordering on pointless to try and find shorts/pants small enough for her waist but long enough for her legs and shirts long enough to cover her belly. I'm not a fan of skimpy clothes for children sooo......

I copied over and cut out this pattern for her. In PINK of course. Hopefully tonite I can get it sewn up. I'm certainly no expert at sewing clothes so it's all learning experience for me.

I bought some timtex today to go in the small clutch purses for my mom. We are going down to visit family in our hometown this weekend so I would like to get one put together for her before we go. Don't know if I'll be able to sqeeze it in though.

Continuing to work on the camo crochet. I'm on my 4th skein of yarn already. This is my first official crochet project and I have no clue how much yarn to buy! I really enjoy doing it...it's very relaxing and destresses me. I found out today that there is a yarn store downtown here. I'll be visiting there soon!

The kids and I spent the afternoon outside again. The temp was just perfect today. The kids played and hunted dandelion puffs to wish on. I took a few pics of the bloomers in our yard and worked on the camo blanket. Then our elderly lady neighbor came over and we walked around her yard and talked....such a sweet lady. I'm going to miss her when we move.

Oh, and to my friend Beth, notice that navy t-shirt in the first photo? recognize it? LOL! "Charlie's Angels" I can't believe I still wear that shirt!

It's OVER!!!

Our house hunting is officially OVER!! We moved to NC, from GA, 8 mo ago and have been searching for a home for a little over 6 mo now. Due to prices being almost double what we are accustomed to paying, it has taken some considerable searching to find the right home for us. Want to see it? While it may not my ideal dream home, I love it!! 3br/3ba 2200 sq ft. on 1 acre. 2 streams running through the front yard and a large fenced in backyard. It is a flat lot ( a little difficult to come by here in the Smoky Mtns) in a nice rural neighborhood. Check out that huge laundry room!! I think it's bigger than the kitchen LOL. The other pic is of the upstairs living room. There is a large den downstairs. Two porches on the front and a great deck on the back...my favorite rooms of a house! I can't wait to get in there and decorate my "cottage"!

In other crafting news, I am coming along with DS's (pictured above in the laundry room) crochet camo blanket. See that camo hat? I told you he was all southern boy. I'll try to take another pic of it soon to post my progress. I got all my new fabric washed yesterday so I need to get busy sewing.

New project and weekend fun!

I am working on a new project. I am teaching myself to crochet and have fell in love with all the ripple and granny 'ghan's out there! I was dying to start on a pretty pink one for my middle daughter, but felt like I needed to make something for my oldest first. His choice?.....camo of course! You can't deny this boy is from the south! He's six years old and lives to fish. He's not hunting yet, but you'd never know it from talking to him. He lives and breathes all things hunting and fishing. Career aspirations?.....Why, Hunter & Fisherman, of course! So, following along with his request for a camouflage room when we buy a home, I am making him a camo blanket. It is horrible Red Heart acrylic yarn, but he doesn't care. I wonder if I could back it with some fabric or something? I'll have to check into that.

These pics were taken Friday afternoon. I've gotten many more rows done over the weekend, but have a loooooong way to go! Isn't it hideous?! I can't wait to get it finished up so I can get some really soft yarn and get started on my girls afghans! A granny square for 4yr dd and ripple for 2 yr dd. That is our kitty Tadpole...well, "Tad" for short. He's about a year old and just another baby in the family!

We spent the entire weekend outside. It is so beautiful here in NC. Yesterday we went on a short hike with the kids and took them fishing to a stream. Didn't realize until after the fact, that we weren't supposed to be fishing the month of March...OOPS!

I also bought some new fabric this weekend! I am making some small clutch-style purses for my mom (she's not supposed to carry a purse on her shoulder any longer) and need to get some summer outfits for the girls done, and some sleeping shorts for DS.

Tree swings, 4-leaf clovers and baby salamanders

Our little family moved to western NC 8 months ago. My husband and I have lived our whole lives in south GA but finally made the exciting move to the most beautiful area that feels more like home every day. We are currently renting a small but adorable home. Yes, our family of 5 feels cramped, but I just adore the location of this place. We have a small stream that runs through the yard and when the weather is warm the kids love to stick their feet (and every other body part) in that cold muddy goodness. Yesterday, the temps hit a balmy 75 degrees so in response to the insistence of my three rugrats, they donned their swimsuits and headed outside to play in the stream for the first time this year. My 6 yr old son headed to the neighbors small pond to catch (and release) tadpoles to check if they had legs growing yet, my 4 yr old daughter (the swimsuit and warm weather worshipper) brought out 2 towels, crayons and paper and her pony collection to play with and my 2 year old daughter headed straight for the water in her chubby cuteness.

I walked around enjoying the warmth and the feel of the soft grass under my feet. I squatted down to check out the clovers and spotted a 4-leaf clover! First one I've found in my 29 years. I was thrilled to say the least. The kids were not as impressed however and quickly ran back to their chosen stations. I spotted tulips close to showing their pretty faces, yellow forsythia blooming and picked pansies with the girls. My son caught a very tiny baby salamander, much to his delight, which we put in a small bowl until daddy got home. After dad's oohing and aahing they quickly set it back in it's muddy sanctuary.

Elfin sugar dishes and fond memories

I'm having some serious problems with placing these pics!

Recently, I was poking around a local antique store and found a few treasures. Three of those adorable bread plates and that dreamy yellow sugar dish. Notice those cute elf-eared handles? How could I possibly leave it there with ears like that?! I also found a small stack of old cloth calendars. I remember my Granny had these hanging on the back of her kitchen door during my growing years. I spent a lot of time at her house and have so many wonderful memories in that kitchen of hers. My Papa passed away a few years ago and I don't get to see her near as often as I'd like. She lives in my hometown in GA and we live 7 hours north in NC.

Anyway, I found one with my birth year on it, 1977, and decided to make an apron out of it. Brought it home, folded the top to make a pocket, sewed on some grosgrain ribbon and some buttons that were in a stash given to me by my mom years ago. It may not be fancy, but I really love the memories it evokes! Hopefully, our house-searching will end soon and I can find a permanent home for these treasures.

A new place for me

I have been pooring over all the beautiful newfound blogs out there and have been inspired. I am mostly self-taught in most all my crafting. Sewing, crochet, embroidery.... I am reaching my 30th birthday this May and am learning so much about myself the older I get. Realizing who I am and what I truly enjoy. So this blog is for me...an indulgence if you will...to enjoy my new talents (or what hopefully will become a talent!) and be inspired by all the brilliant artists out there.
